Hi and welcome to Soaperia. My hope is that you will get the hoe down, low down and everything in between about soap.
As well as my own journey and experience with soap and it’s relatives you’ll be able to find articles on the history of soap, recipes for soap, allergies, side effects and solutions to using soap that won’t irritate your skin and much more.
So what is soap and do we really need it? In this ever increasing germ phobic world that we live in the short answer is yes! However if you are like me and have experienced problems with soaps, shampoos, detergents, washing powders and any other cleaning products that saturate our consuming habits you might be interested in the longer answer which deserves a little research.
The short story about my journey with soap started about 6 years ago when I developed an itch everywhere. From the top of my head to the tip of my toes, this itch was maddening. Then my daughter who was about 5 years old at the time also developed it, however as a 5 year old she was not able to deal with it at all and at that point I thought I needed to find a solution to this problem.
I whisked her off to the GP only to find out that there was no evidence of a rash, an allergy or a skin disorder - however my GP gave me 1 clue that led me to my next discovery. She asked if we had changed our washing powder, shampoo or soap lately. With this new question in mind I started my research. By chance I received my local health magazine that had published an article on SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulfates). The article was basically talking about the increase of reactions to various body and hair cleansers that contained SLS. The reactions that were listed were; itchiness, redness, dryness, dandruff and flakey skin. Bingo! This was my first breakthrough……..
